Isang tribute ni Miss Universe Philippines 2023 Michelle Marquez Dee para kay Apo Whang-Od ang isinuot niyang evening gown sa 72nd Miss Universe in El Salvador.

Nirampa ni Dee ang sheer nude evening gown na napapalibutan ng black jewels. Inspirasyon ng kanyang gown ay ang tinaguriang  “last and oldest mambabatok of the Kalinga ethnic group” na si Apo Whang-Od.

Dinesenyo ni Mark Bumgarner ang naturang gown na nagpapakita ng rich cultural heritage nating mga Pinoy.

Post ni Michelle sa Instagram: “A tribute to a legendary Filipina who has become an icon, preserving the rich cultural heritage of indigenous tattoo art. She has achieved global recognition and symbolizes timeless beauty, coinciding with Miss Universe lifting its age restrictions, championing inclusivity and challenging age stereotypes. A true icon and the last of her kind, a symbol of bravery, beauty, and inclusivity…Whang-Od.”

Si Apo Whang-Od ay si Maria Oggay, isang tattoo artist from the village of Buscalan within Tinglayan, Kalinga. Parte siya ng Butbut people of the larger Kalinga ethnic group.  

Nagsimulang mag-tattoo si Whang-Od sa edad na 15. Mga Butbut headhunters and women ang kanyang mga tina-tattoo-an. Pinagpapatuloy pa rin niya ito ngayon para sa mga bumibisitang turista sa Buscalan.

Ilan sa mga local celebrities na may Whang-Od tattoo ay sina Kuya Kim Atienza, Rhian Ramos, Paolo Ballesteros, Raymart Santiago, Patricia Tumulak, Ice Seguerra, Liza Diño, Sheryn Regis, Maine Mendoza, at Drew Arellano. 

Noong April 2023, sa edad na 106, she made another history by being the oldest person to ever be on the cover of Vogue.
