The Butcher | The Bea-Dominic marriage probably wouldn't have worked anyway

I’m no fortune teller, but my hunch is that Bea would eventually marry a foreigner – probably a Spaniard from Madrid where she has made her second home. The best of luck to Bea. And to Dominic, remember that these, too, shall pass. It’s a proven showbiz adage. It has worked previously for other entertainment people and it certainly will work for you.

I’m no fortune teller, but my hunch is that Bea would eventually marry a foreigner – probably a Spaniard from Madrid where she has made her second home. The best of luck to Bea. The Bea Alonzo-Dominic Roque romance was the typical A Star is Born story: Movie actress outracing her male partner in the competitive showbiz profession.

A Star is Born had been done about four times in Hollywood. The first was with Janet Gaynor and Fredric March in 1937.

Then, there was the 1954 A Star is Born edition with Judy Garland and James Mason. That was where Judy Garland could have won an Oscar, an award that eluded her till death.

There was also the 1976 version with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.  The film’s theme song, "Evergreen," became very popular even years after its release.

The last time there was A Star is Born remake in Hollywood was in 2018. It starred Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

There doesn’t seem to be a Filipino film version of A Star is Born. But the story has been happening in real life – among local showbiz stars.

That was the tragedy in the marriage of Lilia Dizon and Gil de Leon, the celebrity parents of Christopher de Leon. Lilia was a top leading lady in Philippine cinema, one of the sexiest stars ever. But she married Gil de Leon, the studio’s resident villain.

The union collapsed after the birth of the youngest daughter, Lara Melissa de Leon. Could it be possible Gil’s ego couldn’t accept the fact that his wife was the bigger star?

To get out of the marriage, Lilia had to escape to America and didn’t return until decades later. Her children seemed to have understood her predicament because her relationship with them was excellent until she died during the pandemic season.

Gloria Romero also married an actor below her stature. Sure, her husband Juancho Gutierrez was a leading man. But Gloria was still the much bigger star. That must have hurt Juancho’s pride. Their marriage also ended in separation.

Another LVN star, Tessie Quintana (one of the loveliest faces ever) also married a character actor, Johnny Reyes. This marriage was more successful. It only ended when Tessie died of cancer at the age of 37 in 1969.

This marriage worked because Johnny was also a businessman, whose family owned the printing business, Vera-Reyes. He didn’t have to rely on showbiz to be able to give Tessie and their children a good life.

In modern times, there’s the union of Ryan Agoncillo and Judy Ann Santos. No doubt, Judy Ann is the superstar. But if you throw both of them in a crowd, they will both be received warmly and equally by the people – thanks to the fact that Ryan is part of the iconic show, Eat Bulaga.

If ever there’s a chance of Bea Alonzo and Dominic Roque reconciling and getting married (although that doesn’t seem possible anymore), they may end up suffering from the A Star is Born syndrome. It was a mismatch even from the beginning.

Physically, they don’t look good together. I saw one video of them walking (must have been at the lobby of the Manila Peninsula) and – in her heels – Bea towered over Dominic. He actually looked like a ring bearer beside her.

Fans, of course, would have wanted Bea to end up with screen partner John Lloyd Cruz. But the chemistry between them seems to work only in the movies.

After several box-office hits together, they went separate ways career-wise. John Lloyd went on to feed his soul by doing indie movies with Lav Diaz. It wasn’t at all a bad move.

John Lloyd embracing independent cinema made him a more significant actor in Philippine movies. He now has two Gawad Urian trophies and had been named best actor of the decade two years ago.

On the part of Bea, having moved to GMA diminished her stature as an actress. She has yet to make a successful project with the Kapuso network.

Since she moved to GMA, she has found success only in her own personal platforms where she shares ongoing events in her personal life – like buying an apartment in Spain.

Of course, she always kept an update on her romance with Dominic Roque. When the two publicly admitted they were dating, people couldn’t help but shake their heads.

Previously, she had gone out with the late Mico Palanca, Zanjoe Marudo and Gerald Anderson. And if rumors are to be believed, had a little something with Jake Cuenca.

The star wattage of these actors are less bright than Bea’s. But if not John Lloyd Cruz, who else is on her level? Maybe she should have shopped around outside of her profession.

Among the men she dated, the public found Dominic as the least compatible to her. He was never a big star for one.

Bea’s followers didn’t seem to be jumping up and down with joy when she got engaged to Dominic. And now the engagement is off.

But if they didn’t split up and do proceed with their marriage plans, do you think things would have worked out well between them? Sorry, but it’s been proven that water always seeks its own level.

Bea may just eventually lose respect for her husband if her career continues to go up, up and up, while his stay put. It’s going to be the classic A Star is Born pattern. They’ll be the next Pokwang and Lee O’Brian.

The expensive condo unit and the gasoline station supposedly owned by Dominic wouldn’t be enough to match what Bea has accumulated through the years. And the fact that Dominic’s possessions are said to have come from questionable means would worsen things for them.

What’s in store for them now? I would hate to be in Dominic’s shoes at the moment. He’s really in a pitiable situation. Oh, the things they throw at him. The rumors and speculations are so ugly, let’s not repeat them here anymore.

But what about Bea? People say she’s lucky to have found out the truth (if that really is the truth) before it’s too late.

Two days ago was Chinese New Year and predictions for the Dragon Year were being spouted by every other psychic.
