Gratitude, talent, and full dedication are Nanette Inventor's secret to her showbiz longevity. She also recalled a disadvantage she experienced at the height of her fame as Doña Buding, her iconic role in the variety show The Penthouse Live!

This year, Nanette Inventor will celebrate her 41st year in the entertainment industry. For the veteran comedienne-singer, it’s no easy feat. However, during her recent management contract signing with Viva Artists Agency (VAA) last Tuesday, June 18, she shared a simple formula that she believes is key for lasting over four decades in the business.

“You should always be grateful for the talent that was given to you,” she told members of the press. “And then you use that to entertain a lot of people, [especially] your family, your friends, your neighbors, and your country.”

“’Pag ginamit mo [ang talent mo], kailangan full dedication ka diyan. Ibig sabihin nun, pag-aralan mo kung saan ang kahinaan mo, kung saan ang lakas mo. I-combine mo ang dalawa kasi kung minsan ’yong kahinaan mo, siya ang magtutulong [para mahanap] kung saan ang lakas mo,” the newest Ka-Viva added.

For Nanette, with that formula in mind, along with prayers to the Lord, anyone can achieve longevity not just in showbiz, but in other careers, as well.

Siguro ’yong ganoong formula tsaka ’yong lagi kang nagdadasal sa kahit na anong desisyon na gawin mo sa buhay, palagay ko tama na yong formula na ’yon,” she said. “Tsaka ’yong lahat ng ginawa mo, gusto mo at gusto mong makatulong sa kapwa mo.

It’s been evident that Nanette has been following that formula after being in the industry since the 1980s. She has been putting smiles and laughs to every audience and televiewer in the country since then, most especially for her satirical role as Doña Buding in the variety show The Penthouse Live!

Doña Buding, a brash, snobbish rich social climber, has been Nanette’s most iconic character to date. Because of that role, she has been noticed by fans not only in the Philippines but in the United States, as well.

"Every time I do shows in the US, [...] lahat siguro ng mga nagpunta doon, 'Ayan si Doña Buding,' even the ones in the carousel baggage 'O ayan si Doña andyan na.' Sabi ko talaga 'Hindi ako mamimigay ng pesos kasi dollars ang dala ko', so sabi ko sa sarili ko 'Bakit nagawa ko nanaman 'yon?' kasi nga engrained na sa akin, at hindi na talaga siya mawawala," she said.

However, Nanette admitted that there are some advantages and disadvantages to playing the character.

“Advantages were it made me popular, it made people think about themselves with what they’re saying, they may have been ridiculed because of that. Parang nakapagbigay ka ng leksyon because you are imparting something from them to learn from.”

When it comes to the disadvantage, Nanette said some people believed that the Doña Buding she portrayed is actually her in real life, having recalled one incident where a woman attacked her during one of her concerts at the Folk Arts Theater in Pasay.

“I was wearing a necklace that was studded pero ‘PNB’ ’yon, pwet ng baso,” she said in jest. “Tapos hinila [nung babae] ’yon, nagkasugat ako tsaka nasakal ako. Akala ko talaga mamamatay ako! Nagalit siya, sabi niya ‘Amin na ’yan! Bebenta ko! Nagugutom kami dito!’”

That incident made Nanette realize that her portrayal of Doña Buding had a bad connotation for people in poverty.

Akala nila naghihirap sila dahil sa mga taong katulad ko. It broke me for a while but, then, I realized it’s because they don’t know what satire is. They probably don’t know these things,” she said.

With her recent signing with VAA, in collaboration with her existing management Stages, Nanette is excited to collaborate with the young generation of stars, as well as create exciting content for social media—including a podcast. She also said she wants to make a recording under Viva, as well as continue bringing laughs in various shows and projects.
