As an OPM icon and the Concert King, madalas matanong si Martin Nievera kung sino among the young performers ang pasado sa pamantayan niya as possibly future icons din sa larangan ng music, both recording and live performances.
In his recent press conference for his upcoming “The King4Ever” concert, which also serves as his 42nd anniversary as a performer, muling natanong si Martin nito.
“I have a long list, I just couldn’t remember all their names...But sa male would be Darren Espanto,” pahayag ni Martin. “I think he has a chance to be the new and improved version of Gary Valenciano. He sings, he dances, he can spiel, he can do Broadway, he speaks well...I think he can be a singer that could be [accepted] worldwide.”
Patuloy ng Vicor artist and concert king: “For the female [singers], right now, the voice I’m loving right now is Jona’s. Jona has got the clearest high belt [note] of all the singers,”
When some members of the entertainment press suggested other names, pinangatawanan niya ang choice n’yang si Jona, na isa ring Viva artist.
“Klarisse [de Guzman] is another one,” aniya. “Morissette is another unbelievable performer. But for singers, the clear and high notes of Jona. But don’t get me wrong, they’re all good. Morisette I think also has a chance to go worldwide. I think she’ll go worldwide before Jona. But as far as good singers that I love, Jona.”
Sa mga grupo naman, he singled out BINI although konti palang naman daw ang personal exposure niya sa mga members nito. All he has, he says, are mere observations.
“I love BINI, you know why? ’Cause they have not lost their humility and how they handle themselves. I could be wrong. I’ve met each of them but I’ve spent very little time with them but I can see that they’re very passionate about their craft but at the same time, they haven’t lost their humility—which they could do because they’re huge.
Naintriga kami sa sinabing ’yon ni Martin kaya natanong din namin siya kung naka-experience na rin ba siya ng mga baguhang nag-a-attitude na.
“Alot!” pagtatapat niya. Sorry I can’t give you a name but I have a list of people who have to remember that what you’re enjoying now is not forever.”
Tama. Ang Concert King lang ang forever!
His “The King 4Ever” concert, by the way, is slated on September 27 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. The Ogie Alcasid-Cacai Mitra-produced concert will be jointly directed by Lloyd Mamaril and Paolo Valenciano.
