Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez believe artists who use curse words in their songs are more expressive and have their own style when it comes to their music.
The Philippines’ Concert King and Concert Queen shared their thoughts about the matter during the recent press conference of their upcoming concert “Always & Forever” which will take place this February 7.
“Iba na ngayon, eh. Ngayon kasi mas ine-express na nila ’yong mga nararamdaman nila. Dati kasi, we express it through poems. Galit ka pero very poetic pa rin ’yong mga words. Ngayon, iba na. Mas vocal sila, they’re not afraid to use certain words, they’re not afraid to express what they actually feel in a very very long sentence,” Pops told the press.
For Martin, he recalled that back in the day, singers like him used songs to express and showcase a different side of them.
“We felt that songs that we write or sing have to express another part of us,” he further said. “The singers and composers of today, who we are so proud of ’cause they have really taken OPM to the next level. They are not afraid to show who they are, what they say, how they say it.”
Martin believes that singers today who use curse words as part of their lyrics show bravery, that they are not afraid of expressing what they want to express.
“For me, hindi sila takot magbigay-todo. ’Yong talagang buong-puso,” he said.
“They’re more expressive and they’re not afraid to say what they want to say,” Pops added.
Martin added that he is such a huge fan of OPM singers today, especially with how they are currently taking OPM in the map.
“OPM is so nice now, I’m such a fan of all these new songs. I love what they’re doing and where they are going. Even better, I love what they’re taking us,” he said.
Pops, who also is starting 2025 with a bang with the release of her make-up line Pick Cosmetics, and Martin are beyond excited to celebrate their “Always & Forever” concert, which marks their 40th year of working together. The concert will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Arena this coming February 7.
"If there's anything we can be proud of is that we hold a certain stature in the music industry that we can still entertain regardless," Martin said. "We're proud that we're able to still be great together even though we're un-together."
