Marina Summers, runner-up of the first season of Drag Race Philippines, made Filipinos proud after bagging the win in the premiere episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs. the World.
The episode, which aired on Saturday, February 10 (Manila time), featured the 11 cast members showcasing their talent in a variety show. The Filipina drag queen did a fire dance-like performance to her single “AMAFILIPINA” which is her own rendition of the Maymay Entrata hit “AMAKABOGERA.”
"I'm just so excited to put on a great show. We may speak different languages, we may come from different places, but drag is our language and we share that," Marina said when the challenge was announced by the show’s host and main judge RuPaul.
In the runway category of the episode, the 11 queens had to showcase an attire inspired by their respective hometowns. In her outfit, Marina paid homage to the farmers of the Banaue Rice Terraces.
"Bringing my Filipina heritage and culture to the main stage, I feel very, very proud. I have this basket which is carrying sticky rice," Marina said. "I grew up surrounded by farmers and to be wearing this in front of the whole world gives me so much joy and pride.”
During the judges’ critiques, the Drag Race Philippines alum was showered with praises for her aforementioned performance.
"I loved your performance in the variety show. There was so much energy there, the empowering lyrics. It was just wonderful to see," comedian-host Alan Carr said.
"Those shoes that you performed in are one of the most difficult types of shoes to perform in. So, I don't know if I should applaud you or yell at you," singer Michelle Visage added.
After explaining the inspiration behind her outfit to the judges, Marina was told by RuPaul that she represented the Philippines beautifully. Then, after deliberation, the latter announced Marina and Drag Race France season 1’s La Grande Dame as the top 2 queens of the episode.
Meanwhile, Gothy Kendoll from RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK season 1 and Mayhem Miller from RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10 and RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars season 5 were announced as the bottom two.
Marina and La Grande Dame then competed for the win in a lip-sync battle to the song “Dreamer” by Livin’ Joy. After an electric performance by the two, RuPaul declared Marina as the winner of the episode.
This victory earned Marina a golden RuPeter badge and the opportunity to eliminate one of the queens in the bottom two. She opted to eliminate Mayhem, saving Gothy in the process.
Marina was first announced as part of the show’s cast earlier this year, making her the first drag queen to represent the Philippines in an international All Stars edition of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The 27-year-old drag queen from Makati is joined by other drag superstars from various drag race franchises, namely UK queens Choriza May, Gothy Kendoll, Jonbers Blonde, and Tia Kofi, as well as the United States’ Scarlet Envy and Mayhem Miller, Arantxa Castilla Lamancha from Drag Race España, Hannah Conda from Drag Race Down Under, Keta Minaj from Drag Race Holland, and La Grande Dame from Drag Race France.
Marina is best known for her stint in Drag Race Philippines season 1 last 2022, where she was a runner-up to Precious Paula Nicole.
