“Inisip ko na finally, this is it. It’s time na itaas ko rin ang bandera namin since it’s also my advocacy. “It wasn’t naman pressure for me, actually na-excite nga po ako na finally, mabibigyan na kami ng pagkakataon to bring awareness to everyone.”

(Technically, her first acting stint was as a bit player in an ABS-CBN TV show that starred Derek Ramsey long time ago.)

“As a first-time actor, it wasn’t very difficult,” saad ni Rita during the Lulu virtual media conference kahapon, January 17.

“First of all, everyone was very warm. Everyone is guiding me. The whole experience, it’s really great. Nag-enjoy naman po kami. Everything was smooth sailing naman.”

“Actually, masuwerte po nga ako kasi I ended up with the right people,” esplika ni Rita.  “Si Direk Sigrid [Bernardo] was very good, ang galing-galing niya. She really guided me and trained me. Also Rhen [Escaño] and our acting coach, Ms. Dolly de Leon.

“As for Abi’s role, it’s really close to mine. But the preparation when I was reading the script, I had to internalize Abi.  It wasn’t difficult for me because hindi rin kami nalalayo ng character.

“As LGBT playing myself also, kinailangan pa rin ng workshop. We really had to study our lines and difficulty-wise, at first, nakakakaba siya. Kinabahan po ako kasi, I didn’t know what’s gonna happen. But along the way, I was guided.”

Mabait siyang talaga. Natutunan ko na I can also be friends with someone like her.

“No pretensions at all,” saad niya.

Naitanong din kay Rita kung katulad ni Jake Zyrus na naging trans man (a man who was assigned femake at birth), ay nagkaroon din ba siya ng thoughts na baguhin ang sarili physically to match the masculine emotions.

“Well, just to be clear, I respect the people, like sina Jake Zyrus, nirerespeto ko na ginawa nila ’yun,” agad na pagpapasintabi niya. “I guess, mas nahahanap nila ang happiness nila.

“With me naman po, very happy naman po ako sa aking biological [makeup]. ’Yun lang naman po, my only preference is that [I love women]… but I’m not really planning to change anything in my body.”

Ang Lulu, na isang rom-com about two lost souls trying to find themselves but found each other instead, ay mapapanood na sa Vivamax starting January 23 and every Sundays thereafter.
