It was last Monday, October 7, when the drama series Starla premiered in local television screens. The series stars child stars Jana Agonicillo, in the titular role, and Enzo Pelojero with veteran actors Joel Torre and Judy Ann Santos.
Judy Ann makes a comeback in the primetime teleserye scene after five years, this time giving life to antagonist Teresa in the drama series. Veering away from her usual protagonist roles, Judy Ann shared in the press conference for Starla that it is about time she portrayed a different set of characters when it comes to starring in teleseryes.
“There are younger ones, there [is] a new batch of fresh actors and actresses there already who can do that part,” she explained to the press. “Graduate na ako doon. Pwede na ako mag move forward. Napapanood ko na sila. Keri na nila ’yan. Dito na ko sa part na ’to.”
With the Queen of Pinoy Soap Opera playing such a cool, icy antagonist in this particular series, she was asked who she takes inspiration from when it comes to giving life to the character.
“[Si] Miranda [sa] Devil Wears Prada,” she revealed to the press. “’Yon ’yong pineg namin. Nag-fi-fit siya sa character ni Teresa kasi may story behind kung bakit naging ganun siya katigas, postura, matapang sa labas pero ’yong loob niya, parang shine-shield lang niya because of the pain na bitbit ng puso niya.”
It could be recalled that The Devil Wears Prada is a 2006 cult classic starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway. Streep portrayed Miranda Priestly, the calm yet demanding editor-in-chief of the fictional Runway magazine whose excessive demands and humiliating treatment tests the patience of her new assistant Andrea Sachs (Hathaway) for one year so the latter could find a job as a writer or reporter in a different publication.
“Gusto ko ’yong ginawa ni kumareng Meryl [Streep] doon,” Judy Ann said in jest. “Kailangan ma-achieve ko siya!”
