Back in May 2019, after producing the digital film Mystified in which she starred in, Iza Calzado revealed that she was producing another movie: the historical drama Culion starring herself, Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Meryll Soriano, and, in a very special role, John Lloyd Cruz. She disclosed the information right after the contract signing of the movie.
Last Monday, September 30, during the teaser trailer and ad campaign launch for the film, the actress was asked about her experiences as a producer, she listed out a few realizations, despite admitting that she has only minor roles in the producing part.
“Ang realization ko is if you’re producing a film, you [...] really have to have room for when things may not go as planned,” she told the press. “You really need to put a person to be manning the ship, good captains such as direk Alvin [Yapan] and, of course, (producer) Shandi [Bacolod]. It’s no joke.”
Admitting that she is only “saling kit-kit” when it comes to producing Culion, Iza wishes that, someday, she could produce a film at a full-blown capacity like the main producers of the film.
“Ito pa,” she speaks of another realization on producing. “’Pag pinakain mo ng masarap ang tao, kahit puyatin mo, masaya sila!”
Keeping the movie set light and happy is another one of her realizations, not only as a producer but as one who works in films.
“Everybody will really perform well and just be happy to be on set. Talagang ilalagay nila ’yong puso nila doon,’” she concludes.
Culion has been submitted to the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) committee for deliberation. According to Iza and film’s producer Shandi Bacolod, the decision of the MMFF committee will be announced on Tuesday, October 8. Good luck to the whole team!
