Direk Darryl Yap, hindi natitinag ng bashers; remains on top of his game

“These people when they make bashing tapos I rebut, ang dating kasi daw hindi ko matanggap ’yong criticism. Pero for me, I accept criticism it’s just that, I react.”

“These people when they make bashing tapos I rebut, ang dating kasi daw hindi ko matanggap ’yong criticism. Pero for me, I accept criticism it’s just that, I react.”

His latest brainchild, ang short film na KPL-Thesis Rant has already registered 21M views on Facebook, at 4.1M naman sa YouTube in less than a month. It was only uploaded last February 26. So far, ito, among his several viral shorts, ang pinaka-mabilis umakyat sa millionth rank. Nag-trending at No. 3 sa YouTube after a day, and on the third day after release, Nag-number one na!

(KPL, by the way, stands for kung p’wede lang, as the ranter, in all the Vincentiments KPL series, supposedly only rants in her head but could not actually voice out her hugots for real.)

Chances are, may mapapakawalan at mapapakawalan siyang mga controversial lines. Kung sensitive ka or righteous, you won’t see eye-to-eye with him.

But chances are, panonoorin mo ang mga gawa niya.

If it’s any measure of success, this guy eats bashing for breakfast.

But he won’t budge.

“I cannot say na sanay [na] because sometimes you get really carried away,” pag-amin ni Direk Darryl na saglit na naka-tsika ng pikapika.ph sa Viva office.

“You’re only human and you know what, I’m really... maiksi lang ’yong threshold mo talaga minsan sa bastos in a way na medyo... the bashers kasi they have evolved, e. Sometimes if you’ve done something controversial or may nagawa kang kontrobersyal o ka-bash-bash sometimes you expect na, ‘Oh pag gising ko nito ang dami ng...’

He merely depicted it. And he’s standing by it.

He is, first and foremost, a child of social media, where the culture is to naturally engage.

“So, sometimes sobra na rin akong pinipigilan ng Viva na mag- reply, na mag-tweet, na mag-comment kasi medyo patola talaga ako...’cause I’m from social media, I don’t see it na parang... kasi these people when they make bashing tapos I rebut, ang dating kasi daw hindi ko matanggap ’yong criticism. Pero for me, I accept criticism it’s just that, I react.

“So, kahit ano pa’ng sabihin ko it will just, you know, it will be colored like I don’t accept criticism.

As far as KPL is concerned, dumbbell literally translates to “pabuhat” o isang “pabigat sa kapwa.”

“Dumbbell naman  was originally from an Ilocano term na parang ’yon ’yong expression nila, dumbbell. Parang for me parang dumb ta’s bell parang binubuhat so ’yon lang, all accidentally ano lang naman discovered na p’wde palang maging pa-uso ’yong salita so after Jowable, itong dumbbell medyo kumonek din sa masa.”

So ’yon ang mauuna sa... before KPL-Graduation. So, it’s Bunganay 2- Issuance of Cards...’yong hinihingan ’yong nanay ng pang-spaghetti kapag may honor ’yong anak, binibentahan ’yong mga anak ng buto ng halaman... something like that. So, I guess that’s it.”

As for his mainstream career, ready for showing na ang kanyang gender-bending na Tililing that stars Baron Geisler and Gina Pareño, no less.

“I finished Tililing before 2019 ended tapos I like rested for four days then we shot Ang Babaeng Walang Pakiramdam,” patuloy ni Direk Darryl. “We finished a little later after Valentine’s. So, we started January second week of January and then we finish days after Valentines. So, mauuna siya. Actually, ngayon pini-pressure din ako ng Viva to edit na ang Babae... but I can’t seem to find time to do it kasi I have commercials, I have also some other projects.

At hindi pa man napapalabas ang dalawang nabanggit, he’s already gearing up for his fourth full-length film with Viva. Ang prolific, ah!

“There is, but as much as Viva wanted to set my sail on a different genre because bawal pa kasi sabihin ’yong title... pero my fourth is a hard-hitting dramedy just like Jowable. Pero ito naman it’s about a father. I just don’t know yet kung paano ako dadalhin doon after Ang Babae... with Kim [Molina] and Jerald [Napoles]. So, I don’t know yet.”

Ikaw na, Direk!
