“I started dieting January of 2016,” k’wento ni Mega na naka-station na at that time sa Subic kung saan sila naka-lock in shoot for Revirginized. “This my fifth anniversary and ngayon lang talaga ako... that I hit that point, that weight na nano-notice na.
“Pero kasi nagba-back slide ako... lagi ’yong on the wagon, off the wagon—mas madalas ’yong off...off ako sa diyeta lagi. Foodie ako. Parang feeling ko, ‘Kung mamatay ako bukas, hindi ko kinain ’to, hindi ko na-experience?’”
Pero aniya, foodie pa rin naman daw siya. She still doesn’t deprive herself. Ang nagbago lang ay ang manner in which she eats.
At kung hindi raw masaya ang iba for her, keber! Ang mahalaga ay mapasaya niya ang kanyang loyal Sharonians at magsilbing inspirasyon pa sa mga above 40 years old na nag-a-aspire ding mag-convert to healthier lifestyle.
“Alam mo naman ang Filipino minsan... kahit ano’ng gawin mo, even if for yourself... I’m trying to live up to... ayokong mapahiya ’yong Sharonians ko [na] tuwing manood sila ng movie ko parang, ‘Diyos ko naman, mas maganda ’to kung payat siya.’ Dahil artista ka, e, diba? So, you have to look a certain way.
“But also, ayaw ko naman ’yong masyadong sakal na sakal ako...Actually, I’m grateful that they notice pero alam mo, meron mga Pinoy na hindi mo mapasaya.... ‘Sana ginawa niya yan nu’ng 40’s siya’ or ganyan. No. I believe kasi there’s a time for everything. And, of course, if I could go back 20 years why not? I’m already 55 and that’s no secret. And I’m happy that siguro if I’m able to inspire women who are in their 40’s upward... kahit women in their 60’s 70’s lalo na 50’s—my decade.
“If I’m able to inspire them, kunwari, by just seeing me—na hindi pala kailangan naka-duster ka na pag singkwenta ka na or... kasi iba na ang panahon ngayon, e. Bata pa ako sinabi ko na yon... Twenties ko palang sinabi ko na gusto ko when I’m a lola gusto ko naka-maong pa rin ako. In fact, I have a painting at home that was done before I got pregnant with Frankie... when the painter asked me: ‘Do you want it formal, do you want to be in gown?’ Sabi ko: ‘No, I want you to paint me in what I’m wearing now,’ which was a pair of jeans and long-sleeves polo shirt. Sabi ko: ‘This is me and I want my grandchildren someday to see grandma as she was and always will be.’
“Because I’m still...I really I don’t feel any differently when I did at 23. It’s just really... the clock has been, you know, moving. Tatanda tayo pero it’s just really a number. It’s biological...maybe I get tired now more than I used to pero it’s still the same. Maybe also because I have kids who are young so I’m kept youthful. I also thank my mom for good genes... my mom, her whole side of the family, they all look about ten, twenty years younger than their actual ages. Even my cousins, my titas...”
“I just want to be healthy so I can see my grandchildren and run with them, you know. My dogs keep me busy, they’re my babies and grandchildren [for now]. And also, it’s more for health reason and then bonus nalang ’yong you look better onscreen.”
Dagdag niya, nangangarap pa rin daw siyang gumawa ng mga love story movies na pangka-edaran niya na gaya ng mga ginagawa nila Merryl Streep at Helen Mirren sa Hollywood. And having a trimmed figure could add to her confidence onscreen.
“Also that I want my Sharonians to be proud of me when they watch me naman. Nae-excite din sila. And then pag mas mukha kang artista... gusto kong maging leading lady... ibig kong sabihin, you have to look like a leading lady. Gusto ko pong gumawa ng mga like sila Merryl Streep, diba, she did It’s Complicated... sila ni Alec Baldwin.
“’Yong love stories are not exclusive to teenagers and people in their twenties, you know. What I meant, I want people in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s to be inspired... that they can get healthy pa, not lose hope kung if they’re overweight lalo if they have health issues. Kasi the older you get the more prone you are to getting diseases.
“So, ’yon lang ’yong iniiwasan ko. Also, it’s good for... Inspire is my operative word, it’s my driving force. That’s the word that really makes me want to continue working. I like inspiring people in one way or another. My Viva movies inspired so many people... it’s amazing that I’m not even that person in that movie but since I portrayed that character and their lives were touched by it one way or another. And they became better persons because of certain movies I did. That makes my heart so full.
“So, it’s the same. I’m grateful that they’re noticing that I’m getting healthier, feel healthier and it opens me up to more roles I think.”
