Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu took Hollywood by surprise by announcing to the public that she has welcomed a baby girl with musician-boyfriend Ryan Kattner.
According to E! News, the 38-year old Fresh Off The Boat star delivered her baby over the summer.
“They are doing great, and they're so excited and happy,” says Wu’s rep.
The baby news comes as a surprise since Wu never announced her pregnancy.
Wu became noticeably absent from social media since May 2020. Her Instagram account has declared itself a “defunct account”. Only three photos are posted on the said account.
According to sources, Wu wanted a private pregnancy and does not want so much attention to avoid stress, especially in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The actress’s last public appearance was in February at the Queerties 2020 Awards Reception. She has also been private about her dating life and never posted anything about Ryan in her social media accounts.
Ryan Kattner is the frontman for the band Man Man. He goes by the stage name Honus Honus.
The reason Wu kept her personal life a secret because she once faced criticism for dating interracially. She previously dated American actor Ben Hethcoat.
She told The Hollywood Reporter: “They make this assumption that every single one of my boyfriends has been white based on the one boyfriend they saw on my social media, the one I was dating when I started my account.
“But if this anger is so large and triggered by something kind of small and not necessarily verifiable, then it's about a deeper issue, and I or other Asian women might be the unfortunate target of it.
“The way I try to think about it is if somebody needs to target me as part of their longer journey to figure out how they feel about themselves and their place in the world, I think that's fine. Of course, hateful things don't feel good, but I understand."
Wu is set to return as Rachel Chu in the Crazy Rich Asians sequel, which is currently in development.
Co-star Henry Golding confirmed this: "They've got the two books that Kevin Kwan wrote still to come and they're trying to find an angle to convert those from page to script to film.
“It's a very complicated process because, visually, sometimes a novel doesn't make as much sense as it would on the screen in a direct adaptation. So you have to really change it up to make it interesting."
“The other issue is that we've got the first one to compete with, everybody has a very high expectation. It's not going to be as easy as the first one. It's still a work in progress, for sure."
Constance Wu was last seen in the 2019 film Hustlers with Jennifer Lopez.
